Project Outline
Simplehuman, a respected name in the beauty industry, creates innovative mirrors that streamline the artistic process of makeup. After studying the brand, I was tasked to create a travel makeup kit that fits Simplehuman's ethos of efficient living.
Design Process
When designing this case, I followed a divergent and convergent methodology. This methodology helps me explore many possible solutions that work to hone my final design.
Mood Board
My mood board consisted of products made by Simplehuman as well as traditional travel luggage to give the case a travel heritage feel. I also drew inspiration from unique modular products.
Research and Ideation
After researching the Simplehuman brand, ethos, and design language, I started to ideate. My initial ideations explored unique interactions with the case and multifunctional components. After this set, I found a modular design would likely be the best direction for a positive user experience.
Finding a Direction
After further ideation, I decided to execute on a hard case that uses a detachable vanity mirror as a lid. I began to explore ways to make the base, arm/stand, and mirror fit comfortably as a lid on the case. I 3D printed mockups to understand the scale of the case and the user's interaction with the device.
Prototype Development
Quick CAD models and Keyshot CMF visualization helped me understand the mechanism details while developing a final form that fits the Simplehuman branding.
Sensor Travel
Your home routine, anywhere you go...
Mirror Module
The mirror module acts as the lid of the Sensor Travel. It can be easily disconnected and positioned to the user's preferences. It delivers an uncompromised vanity mirror experience for users. The MagSafe charger on the mirror powers the Trulux lights and can charge your phone on the go.
Easily remove the mirror from its hinge with the press of a button.
Reconfigure the mirror to adapt to your situation.
Brush/Dirty Module
The brush/dirty compartment keeps the makeup module clean. The silicone lining and cleaning pad help keep brushes clean and sanitary. The space to the right of the brushes is meant for makeup packaging that leaks in travel to keep other products cleaner. The folding lid of the module acts as a phone stand when users are doing their makeup and provides UV sanitization when powered by the MagSafe portable charger.

The MagSafe battery can power the UV lights on the folding lid to cleanse items in the brush module.

Users can fold the lid to use as a phone stand when working on their makeup.

Makeup Module
The makeup module stores all the user's makeup in an organized fashion. It opens up like a blooming flower, an ode to feminine elegance. This interaction provides users with a unique experience that excites.

To remove the brush compartment, slide it to the right and pull up for a quick and easy release.

The tabs that are held in place by the detents are handles to open the case up.

Pulling the handles reveals the organized inner compartment.

The makeup module's three silicone organizers easily accommodate most routines, with the ability to fit upwards of 20 common makeup items. The center organizer is meant to fit larger items like bottles, or eyeshadow palettes that might be too long. The side compartments fit most other makeup products like lip gloss, mascara or other cylindrical bottles. Each organizer is easy to clean and helps protect products from damage during travel.

CMF
The main CMF of Sensor Travel is a brushed stainless steel with other finished metal accents. This not only expresses the sturdiness and reliability of the travel case but, also relates to Simplehuman's current design language. Other CMF options use leather to make the product feel elevated like a luxury bag or travel trunk. These skew slightly from Simplehuman's design but offer a more luxury experience and elegance.
